Artist Statement

For a long time, my focus has been on people, places, and the things that often go unnoticed. As an illustrator, I had a tendency to idealize, glamorize, and seek perfection in the service of storytelling.

I have come to realize that the world as it is makes for some great stories and need not be exaggerated or perfected. Through the genuine, candid moments, we can be transported to a place that simultaneously feels familiar, yet also as if seen for the first time. 

Most of my work is painted on-site, which brings me closer to my subject. I often do not listen to any music or use my phone while I paint, allowing the feeling of the moment to draw me in, enabling me to be totally present.

I want my work to instill a feeling of familiarity, while also creating a feeling of seeing something for the first time, to better appreciate the inherent beauty, even in the ordinary things of our every day.
